Troop 258 Adventures on Assateague Island – June 12–14
What a weekend! Troop 258 headed down to Assateague Island for a camping trip that delivered everything Scouting is about — wild weather, wildlife, water, and memories that will last a lifetime.
Friday Night – Arrive and Hold On
The troop rolled in late Friday night and barely had time to get settled before Mother Nature made her presence known. A powerful windstorm swept through camp, giving everyone a taste of real-world camping conditions right from the start. No complaints — Scouts adapt.
Saturday Morning – Surprise Guests at Breakfast
Saturday morning brought one of those moments you just can't plan. As Scouts fired up the griddle and cooked breakfast for rank, Assateague's famous wild horses wandered right into camp to check things out. Let's just say they seemed very interested in what was cooking — but they left empty-hooved. After breakfast the troop hit the trails for a hike and stopped into the visitors center to learn about the island's history and the iconic horses that call it home.
Saturday Afternoon – Beach Day
Lunch was a Jersey classic — Italian hot dogs — before the troop made their way to the beach for some well-earned fun. Scouts hit the waves, tossed the football in the surf, and made the most of a beautiful afternoon on the Atlantic.
Saturday Evening – Horses, Smores, and a Solemn Tradition
The horses weren't done with us yet. They made another appearance at dinner, hovering near the griddle like they had a standing reservation. We respectfully declined to share. As the night cooled down to some comfortable temperatures, the troop gathered around the campfire for s'mores and took part in a meaningful Flag Retirement Ceremony, honoring worn American flags with the dignity and respect they deserve.
Sunday Morning – Packed, Polished, and Out by 7:30
The troop was up early Sunday, knocked out breakfast, broke down camp, and was on the road by 7:30 AM — a testament to the discipline and teamwork these Scouts bring to everything they do.
Assateague, you were wild, wonderful, and worth every gust of wind. Troop 258 will be back.
